Summary

Located at the base of the Wasatch Mountains in Orem, Utah, Utah Valley University (UVU) is the largest open admissions university in the state. UVU is a teaching university that addresses regional educational needs while building a foundation of scholarly and creative work to foster an environment of engaged learning. The University seeks an experienced and innovative leader for its University College to advance its important mission of helping students explore options and have a successful university experience. The Associate Dean of University College will assist the Dean with the vision, strategic planning, and administration of the college with specific duties related to curriculum, program review, assessment, student exceptions, policy, faculty development, research activities, and faculty tenure and rank.

Key Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Serves, and represents University College, on university councils, committees, work groups, and other bodies as assigned.
  • Assists the Dean in the oversight and support of department chairs through the planning and development of new courses and curricula, as well as revisions to existing curricula as assigned. Oversees faculty annual reviews, and any issues pertaining to faculty matters.
  • Directs College academic assessments, program reviews, and accreditation processes. Works collaboratively with departments and programs to maintain annual evaluation processes and meet university and external assessment requirements. Reviews and assesses enrollment at the department level.
  • Assists the Dean with faculty recruitment and hiring and also with the development, rank, tenure, and promotion processes in cooperation with department chairs. Trains department chairs for service on search and RTP committees. Advocates for faculty issues at the college and university level.
  • Serves as a resource on policy issues. Guides the process of gathering information and with developing, interpreting, and implementing university policies and procedures.
  • Oversees student academic issues, including appeals, withdrawals, exceptions to policy, misconduct, complaints, etc.
  • Seeks opportunities for collaboration with academic support systems within the College, including Learning Strategies, Math Lab, Academic Tutoring, Writing Center, Academic Standards and the Academic Counseling Center.
  • Provides support, counsel, and assistance to the Dean on administrative matters as requested, including input on strategic direction and planning for the College, budgeting, accountability requests and reports, and disciplinary issues.
  • Assists the Dean and Dean’s staff in overseeing the daily operations of the College.
  • Represents the Dean at various institutional functions and with the university community as assigned. Acts on behalf of the Dean in the Dean’s absence.
Required Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Achievement of tenure and rank of at least Associate Professor.
  • A minimum of three years of effective higher education administrative and leadership experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current trends and best practices with retention and first-year programming.
  • Knowledge and a solid record of ongoing scholarly contributions.
  • Knowledge and expertise, educational background, experience, and knowledge of current practices and trends related to any of the following: developmental education, ESL, student success, advisement, academic support services, and general studies degrees.
  • Knowledge of educational units dedicated to student success.
  • Knowledge of higher education administrative processes, including but not limited to program assessment, tenure, rank, post-tenure, faculty evaluation, and faculty advocacy.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of administration, supervision, personnel practices, and office procedures.
  • Knowledge and expertise in issues and effective practices related to developmental education, general studies degrees, student success programming, and advisement.
  • Skills in Human relations, decision-making and interpersonal relationship.
  • Ability to conduct assessment according to discipline best practices and university needs.
  • Ability to conduct research, analyze data, write, and prepare papers and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to develop, implement, interpret, and evaluate policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Ability to provide vision and adapt to change.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate degree in a discipline associated with those in the College.
  • Achievement of tenure and advancement in rank as a faculty member in an academic department.
  • A minimum of three years of effective administrative and leadership experience in higher education, preferably as a department chair.
Physical Requirements

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
